Over the past two weeks, the ever-popular Teen Spirit cooking sessions have focused on recipes to inspire a healthy and tasty start to 2015.
The aim of the sessions was to introduce healthy alternatives to the comfort foods that we all enjoy – especially in the cold depths of winter! We wanted to look at how the foods we eat can affect our mood and our self-esteem. Over the two sessions we prepared prawn and kale pasta, chicken fajitas, kale and chili noodles, raw chocolate chunk cookies, noodle soup and mango, strawberry and blueberry crumble.
Over the course of all these recipes, members of Teen Spirit learnt new skills and tried new ingredients. The crumble was a dairy, sugar and wheat free alternative and the chicken fajitas contained many fresh raw ingredients. During the sessions, members learnt about the nutritional benefits of raw vs cooked food, why kale is considered a ‘super-food’ and the benefits of having dairy, sugar and wheat-free desserts as a healthy substitute to processed, store-brought puddings.
